Patton U2-1887 20-Inch High Velocity Whole-House Air Circulator

  • High velocity 20-inch air circulator
  • 360-degree tilt adjustment
  • All metal construction
  • Whole-house cooling power

  • Powered by a rugged, industrial-grade, 312-watt motor, this 18-inch fan is great for cooling an office, garage, workroom, rec room, work site, warehouse, or any large space. It has three speeds, and its heavy-gauge aluminum stand permits you to tilt it through 360 degrees of rotation, meaning you can put it near a window or door to exhaust stale, hot air and draw in fresh, cool air, or set it on the floor to circulate cool air throughout a room. The blue, deep-pitch, teardrop-shaped aluminum blades whirl at a high velocity within a sturdy chrome cage. There's a handle for carrying the fan from place to place and a cord wrap for convenient storage. The fan comes fully assembled and carries an exceptionally long 10-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

This is the PORSCHE 911 TURBO of all fans made in the history of portable fans. I used this fan to exchange 6000 cubic feet of air in the upstairs of my house on a daily basis, in about 3 minutes flat.

Other cheap imitations NEVER COME CLOSE. When I say this I mean that a $40 fan is FIVE TIMES less effective than this fan. This is a piece of delicate, high-performance technology. This fan is to air exchange as Arnold Schwartzennagger is to body building. It's the best THERE EVER WAS.

Yes, these fans do wear out. Well, what do you think happens to the Engine on a 911 Turbo Carrera Porsche? Do you think that the engine lasts 150,000 miles on those cars ?? Get REAL !!!

I set the fan on a platform 3 feet directly in front a window - an 18" x 36" window large enough to give this fan some breathing room, anchor all paper objects and small animals in the room, hold your hands over your ears, and engage the fan at maximum power. WARNING : small pencils, paper clips, and other small objects are likely to be lifted off the ground by the terrific vortex created by this fan. Please take appropriate cautions !!

My fan committed suicide after 2.5 years. From constant daily use, it vibrated and "walked" to the edge of the table I used in front of my window. Then one day, it pushed the table over and landed on the floor, bent. I kneeled down beside my fan to comfort it and say its last rights. "Oh Patton Fan, Blessed are those who give their lives to improve the coolness of others. May you blow and blow and blow in fan heaven from now throughout eternity. Amen."

    5.5 STARS.

Motor bearings froze-up after several years (two seasons of operation).I Contacted by e-mail the company who made the motors. They admitted that the motors burn out because of a faulty lubrication system. They passed me on to a vendor who could not help me by sending me a new motor, but was glad to sell me one for over a hundred dollars. The fan cost about 70.00 dollars new! Well, this is about as far as I got. I recommend, do not buy this particular fan. The company does not stand behind their products, even though they admitted their motors were faulty to begin with.

I should have read the reviews on this fan sooner. I have owned it for three years and thought it was a wonderful fan until the other day when I was standing over it and tipped the fan to face another way when the shaft let loose and sent out horrifying sounds. I ducked and quickly pulled the plug not knowing what had happened. When we opened up the fan to inspect the problem we also noticed that all three blades have cracks in them. I noticed one gentleman said he called the company. On my fan it has Patton Electric in New Haven, In....but I can't find a listing for this company anywhere. Shouldn't they be liable for replacement of this defective fan? If anyone has this companies phone number I would appreciate it if you would list it. Thank you......and please don't buy this fan for your own safety.

I have had one of these wonderful fans for 9 years. It has always run like a top, and still does. Puts out more air on low speed than most do on high. After reading some of the poor reviews here, it seems the newer ones are not made in New Haven Indiana anymore and the quality has deteriorated. They are now made in China, mostly thanks to W@l-Mart's procurement and business practices of bullying American manufacturers to cut costs to a point products can no longer be made here. My fan has a 25 year warranty and I fully expect it will last that long.
So I give it a 3 star rating; an average of a 5 for my old USA made model and a 1 for the new junk throw-away models.

This fan is advertised as a 20" fan. When I receiced it, the fan is clearly marked on the box as an 18" fan. Not only was it NOT the size advertised, but it is poorly packed and damaged enroute to me.

I had bought one of these fans several years ago, thinking that Patton was one of the best fans around. Well, I learned that this is not the case anymore. I had another fan almost like this which only lasted 4 years with two repars to the motor. I thought I would try again with another fan. Well, upon using the fan during the second summer season of owning it, the blade broke near the shaft while the fan was running on high! I have never in my life seen a fan blade do this, and I was thankful that the blade didn't fly off of the shaft, through the grill, and injure me or someone else in the house at the time! A fan blade is turning fast, especially on the high speed, and this could have caused serious injury to someone, but luckily, no one was near the fan at the time! After that, I thought I would try to call Patton for another blade. They told me that the blades were out of stock and they weren't getting anymore in for a while. I decided to contact the store that I purchased the fan since I still had the receipt. They told me to bring it back and they would refund the money. Luckily they refunded me the full amount, but my advice to those who still like the Patton name - They are not the same anymore! Perhaps I got a fan that was from a bad lot of defective blades, but I wouldn't take a chance if I were you! I had two other Patton fans with a 14 inch blade where the motor went bad on them before two years, so I gave up with Patton altogether. My advise to the consumer - Stay away from Patton unless you like their name and buy from a store that has good return policies. Also, save your sales receipt!

Do not buy this fan unless you have some time to kill and a good set of tools, including a rubber mallet. I tried twice to get a fan not damaged in shipment. The shipping box is just too flimsy. After the second try I gave up, got out my tools, and spent about 30 minutes fixing all the damage. Once I got it to run without the fan blades hitting the fan guard or switch assembly I discovered the blade was way out of balance! This explains the noise and blade failures from the other reviews. I'll use it in the garage every once in a while when I work on the cars, but from now on I will read the reviews before I buy.

I have owned a couple of these fans. Compared to most of the plastic fans available at local outlets, this is a great fan. It moves a lot of air and at the price is a good value. It apparently has a 10 yr warranty too, but I neglected to send in the warranty card or save receipts.
Recently, the fan blade on mine came loose from the shaft collar. This appears to be pretty common judging from the other reviews here and Patton should consider a redesign. The collar is essentially a large rivet with a set screw on the side to secure it to the motor shaft. The rivet head mushroom is all that secures the blade to the collar. When mine worked loose, I attempted to repair it by peening the mushroom in a couple locations. This repair did not last long and I noticed that the fan blade was beginning to crack when I took it off to give it a second try.
Contacting customer service meant calling The Holmes Group, a rival that recently bought Patton out and generally makes crappy plastic fans. They had spare switches, motors, but no blades.
So, I ordered an 18" fan blade from an industrial supply house called McMaster-Carr. If you ever need ANYTHING, they probably have it. Their phone number is 732-329-3200 or try them online at www.mcmaster.com. The blade was part # 2090K159 and cost $22.16 and the 1/2" collar was part # 2090K34 (specify 1/2"). The collar cost $5.16 and shipping was $4 from their NJ location to my NY home. I ordered mine at 5:45PM on a Thursday and received the package the next afternoon.
One last thing: The McMaster fan blade maximum rpm rating is 1140 rpm. I did not go so far as to check the maximum speed of the motor and I have not yet tried the fan at full speed with the new blade. I tend to keep the fan on low or medium and it is working well.

I recently took the fan to school and the kids loved it. However once the kids finally had an accident with the unit the blades got loose from the motor and "that all folks"

I agree with several of the other reviews here. My fan lasted four years before the 3 aluminum fan blades cracked and the center collar came loose holding the blades together.Do not buy this fan.

The fan works great for a year. Move air well. At times I wish it was a little less powerfull. But the blades cracked after a year. Use metal epoxy, that worked for another year. Then the blades broke in 3 pieces. I am trying to locate another blade, without success so far (7/18/03)

The 3 aluminum fan blades have cracks in them and the center collar does not hold the assembly together. Had 2 fans for 2 months before blades came apart. Have attempted repairing the blades with "gorilla snot", epoxy, and solder, with short lived success. Moves A LOT of air when blades are holding up. Having no success finding replacement blades...guess that's what happens when everything these days is made in China...

I own 2 of these fans, LOVE them, they move a LOT of air. BUT, do NOT advise putting them up to a window to blow the air OUT. Mine blew so hard, the force of the air against the screen (it was at least 2 feet from the window screen) made the fan fall backwards off the stand I had it sitting on to reach the window and it came apart, bent the blade all to heck. I am just trying to find a website to see if I can get a new blade. Or maybe I should just throw the fan away?

It worked well for 3 years. It was very powerful BUT noisy! I had to raise the volume on my TV when it was on at the same time as the highest setting of the fan. It was very sturdy but definitely did not last their 10 yr guarantee.

After use for approx. 4 yrs. and difficulty finding another vendor (original vendor did not restock) impetus (great product --- very functional) to find product somewhere led to online search. Reading the comments of Griggs (July 6, 2002) and Paretti (June 20, 2002) evoked the thought as to whether the company had produced a "lemon lot", or whether their standards had taken a turn for the worse. This would be a shame since, before reading the two reviews, I would have unabashedly given the product a 5+ based on my personal experience with it.

Not well built! Had fan at my back door to pull the cool night air threw my house. The nuts that hold the motor to the back of the cage came off in the middle of the night. Motor came loose spun around in the cage bent the blade.I woke up to the smell of burning wires. Track it to the fan laying face down still trying to run. Could have burn down the house. Never again!

Do not buy this fan! The 3 aluminum fan blades have cracks in them and the center collar does not hold the assembly together. Had the fan for a year and used it sparingly. I think this fan should be recalled ...

It isn't the most glamorous piece of home decor we have, but it has served us unfailingly for the past three years. Clears out a smoky kitchen in minutes (quiets that dang smoke alarm in seconds), cools down our dog who likes the sun but then comes inside looking miserable from the heat, makes our second-story, high-ceilinged, heat-trapping bedroom more comfortable for sleeping. Does a nice job of moving warmer or cooler air from one part of the house to another and does it quickly and almost-quietly. It does give the occasional rattle and/or hum but it's no worse than any other box or oscillating fan I've ever had. We leave it on low at night because when you're trying to sleep, medium and high speeds sound like soemone's driving a Cessna through the room. Maybe it's just me . . .We haven't had any problems with fall-apart and the only maintenance we've had to do is take the front off to dust the insides. It's been a solid piece of equipment for us and we are looking forward to another summer of it making our not-air-conditioned house a little more comfortable.

I need to replace the 18" diameter blade on this fan, and am having problems finding a source. The fan works great, when it has a blade! Any help out there?

Living in Arizona, I have gone through plenty of fans. I have always had this one in my bedroom. The last three fans I got for my livingroom because of the way they look, all died in no time. Now I dont care if they dont go with my couch. Now I have a Patton in there too.

I've owned one of these fans for 8+ years. It's been difficult locating a vendor that currently sells this item, so I can acquire another. No problems with functionality, and running on the lowest setting accomodates my basic needs. When a blast of cool air is needed, this fan does the trick.

just want to say , i loved it when it ran, but the blade fell apart while it was running....the center piece just ate thru the center of the blades......pretty dum design....aluminum blade with a steel crimp, which one do u think is going to die first. the fan killed itself in 8 months time, since then i have not been able to get in contact with Rival or Patton....the 25 year, warranttee card has an expired "800" number and their website has no contact except to ship the item back. which i will not do if i cannot speak to some one first......its funny i have ventilators that are the same except they use steel blades, and i have never had a problem yet. i have had them for years and they are on more often than not........so i am rather pissed at a warranttee that one can not use, i will never buy another patton product.....why bother if the people are not there to help u out..............just so u know i used it to move a/c air only.......light duty..........i have another patton fan , we bought right after this one, and it is showing signs of blade failure, and bearing slap, it moves warm house air..........

I bought my first patton fan in 1981 and have since bought several for my own use and for my children. It greatly increases the efficiency of my air condition and we occasionaly use it with the heating system in the winter. It is almost never turned off in the summer months. On cool nights we sit it in an open window and draw cool air through out the house. I almost never run it on high......Medium is fine.

This is a great fan! With various windows open in my house, and this fan turned on high, I can get a nice breeze going through the house. This fan isn't quiet, but for the amount of air it moves it isn't bad. The problem is the durability. I have owned two of these fans. The first one lasted three years and the second one lasted only two years. Considering what servicing costs, its not worth fixing. When it works, this is the best fan of its type I've ever owned, but at its price I'm not buying a new one every few years.

I have had a Patton Hi-Velocity fan for over 10 years and always wanted another. The store where I bought it, dropped the line however, and even calls to Patton did not give me the answers I wanted. I see now where I can buy 1-2 more!Fan is a bit noisy, but does it move AIR!Wouldn't buy another brand at any price.

If you are looking for a light duty fan to provide quite ventilation and cooling, this is probably not the fan for you. On the other hand, if you need to ventilate an area of your house, shop or garage quickly and effectively, and don't mind the noise, then this fan will definitely do the job.
